Center for Urban Health Hosts Symposium on Creating Healthy Communities

On October 21, health care providers and community developers gathered to discuss the intersection of their work. Presented by the Pennsylvania Association of Community Development Corporations in partnership with Jefferson’s Center for Urban Health and Philadelphia Local Initiatives Support Corporation, the event featured a panel discussion of best practices and ideas for grounding the work at the neighborhood level. The goal of the conference was to facilitate a sustained dialogue between community development corporations and healthcare providers.

Dr. James Plumb, Professor of Family and Community Medicine and Director of the Center for Urban Health at Jefferson, opened the session.

“Where you live affects your physical health and cognitive abilities,” Dr. Plumb said. “Public Health uses an ecological approach. Available resources, environmental safety, housing, and public policy all affect health.”

Additional participants included Nan Feyler, Deputy Director of Philadelphia Department of Health; Temple University Community Health Worker Program; St. Christopher Hospital’s Farm to Families Program; People’s Emergency Center’s uGO program; and the Community Connector program.
