Should You Practice Meditation?

Andrew Newberg, MD, of the Jefferson-Myrna Brind Center of Integrative Medicine was recently featured in Time magazine online about the practice of meditation.

“There are thousands of different types of meditation,” explained Dr. Newberg.

The common thread in all practices is to block distractions and to focus your attention. By doing so, you become more aware of your thoughts without reacting to them. And, another bonus: meditation has been shown to reduce stress levels.

“That focusing could be on a word or object or physical motion. But regardless, the type of focusing involved in meditation activates the brain’s frontal lobe, which is involved in concentration, planning, speech and other executive functions like problem solving,” said Dr. Newberg.
