Nicknamed the killer headache, cluster headaches are excruciating, intense and debilitating. About 1 in 1,000 people suffer from these agonizing headaches.

Neurologist William Young, MD, of the Jefferson Headache Center recently discussed headaches for a TV news report.

“It’s painful to watch somebody have a cluster. Having the cluster is unspeakable,” says Dr. Young. “The pain is so intense that people will be unable to sit still. They’ll rock, they’ll pound, they’ll even scream and shout.”

Cluster headaches can last from 15 minutes to hours. While there isn’t a cure for the clusters headaches, for some people with the condition, pure oxygen helps alleviate some of the pain and shorten the episode.
