Free Stroke Screening and Risk Assessment at the 19th Annual Stoke Alert Day at Jefferson
The Delaware Valley Stroke Council and Jefferson University Hospitals are partnering to raise awareness of stroke and its warning signs with its 19th annual Stroke Alert Day.
Free stroke screenings and risk assessments will be offered on the Jefferson campus. No registration is needed.
Every 40 seconds, someone in the United States has a stroke. Yet, despite being a leading cause of death and adult disability, fewer than one in five people in the U.S. can recognize a symptom of a stroke.
The good news is that up to 80 percent of strokes can be prevented, and the best way to protect yourself and loved ones from stroke is to understand personal risk and how to manage it.
To recognize and respond to stroke symptoms, use the F.A.S.T. test:
- FACE – Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
- ARMS – Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
- SPEECH – Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Does the speech sound slurred or strange?
- TIME – If you observe any of these signs, it’s time to call 9-1-1 or get to the hospital fast.
